Amazon delivered Sim City 4 yesterday. It runs quite well on my 12"
powerbook (256 MB RAM). The interface seems pretty much the same as
the last release of the game. The two tutorials for terrain and city
development are really nice but of no real value if you have played
the other versions of this game. I haven't played much yet because I
can't seem to find any undo button or undo shortcut. Any ideas
anyone? This undo is especially necessary as they have added auto
secondary roads to the zone button. If you click and drag a large
area of say, residential zones, secondary roads appear to allow motor
access to the houses. If you don't line up your zones just-so you end
up with dead-end roads all over the place. UGHHH! Have stopped
playing until I can fix my dead-ends.

For the most part the game feels and looks pretty much the same. Im
guessing that most of the changes effected were in the infrastructure
of the city. Simulation coefficients and the like...

One other thing. On the maxis web site there is an update posted for
windows users but no update for the mac. I wonder if we don't need it
of if it simply isn't available for mac yet?

Can anyone help me with the Undo?

This raises a question in my mind. When I got my copy of SC2K it came with
an add-on called Urban Renewal (or something like that). It was a separate
program that allowed you to add or delete things like zones, roads, power
lines, etc. in your city at no cost. Does SC4K have any feature that
corresponds to UR? Or lacking that, I wonder if my old copy of UR will work
with SC4K. I'm not optimistic.

I haven't been able to find an undo, either.

However: If you press ESC while you've still got your finger on the
mouse -- as when dragging out a zone -- the zone will disappear. So
you can at least undo midway through.

Further -- if you hold down the SHIFT key while dragging zones, there
are no auto-roads. Praise be. If you hold down the OPTION key while
dragging zones, you can change the way they point. Useful if you want
the houses facing a certain street.

Discovering these three keys made a HUGE difference in the game. Undo
would be nice, but these at least help prevent some of the things that
would have to be undone.

Thanks, that works a charm. It's nice to control my zoning again.

That's good to know. I was wondering if my 12" Powerbook (640MB RAM) would
be able to cope with it.
